Sandy Playdough

The other day was rainy, dull and dreary. Sammie wanted to go play outside and play in her sandbox, so while trying to find something to keep her occupied inside, I decided to try and bring some of the sand inside. :) I really didn't want to bring actual sand inside and have a huge mess to clean up. I went on a  Pinterest hunt to see what I could find.

I found this recipe for Sand Play dough and just knew that Sammie would get a kick out of this

Recipe for Sand Play dough

4 cups play sand
3 cup flour
1 1/4 cup water
1/4 cup oil

Mix all ingredients together and knead until dough forms. Add more water if it's too dry, add more sand or flour if it's too wet

This recipe makes up a large batch of play dough. It could be cut in half  for one child.

Sammie thought it was hilarious to have the sand in the house and to be mixing it in :)

Our sandy play dough all ready to be played with:) It has the neatest texture, gritty from the sand, yet smooth like regular play dough.

I thought since it was sand that maybe Sammie might like to have some sand related things to play with in the sandy play dough. So I set out a sand bucket with some shells, rocks, glass gems and some little dinosaurs.

Nope, she just wanted her regular play dough toys. I had forgotten how resistant this child is to change lately. Once she has played with or done something one way, that is the only way she will do that thing.

So I started playing with the shells and such, thinking maybe if she saw me playing with them, that she might want to too.

She was quite happy making pies, cookies and other things like that :)

Maddie soon joined in the play too. :)

Maddie tried to make some fossils with the dinosaurs.

The indents are kind of hard to see here, but they looked pretty neat :)

The girls had a great time with this play dough and even Austin got into it for a bit. He had no problem sticking his feet in it, but wouldn't let it touch his hands. lol

This was a great new type of play dough :) I can see this being played with a lot.  I can also see us trying out lots more new textures and scents of play dough in the future.

  2. We did a similar activity. It was a different recipe though. Isn't it fun! We had one that would turn rock hard once it dried. Kind of a fun way to do a sand save-able castle.

  4. Neat! I bet playing with it will make your hands soft with that sand rubbing against it.

  6. How long can you keep it since it has "food" in it?

    1. I'm not really sure how long it will keep. We've now had it almost two weeks, kept in a ziploc bag, and I've noticed that the oil is beginning to seperate. But I'm not sure if that's because of the type of play dough it is or if it is because of how hot it has been here lately.
Normally home made play dough will last a long time, as long as it is stored in a sealed container or bag.

  9. Saw this featured on the Sunday Showcase.... What a neat idea! The playdough recipe sounds much simpler than one we did a while back, too!

  10. What fun! I really love this idea. We have lots of sand (overflow from filling the sandbox), so I think we'll have to give this a whirl.
