I've been wanting to do this growing grass head activity with the kids for quite awhile, but I was having a hard time finding a small bag of grass. I figured that there was no sense in spending a lot of money to buy a big bag of seed only to use a small amount of it.
One day while browsing our local dollar store, I found a little bag. So I grabbed it and the others supplies to make the grass head guys.
I waited until the weekend to set it all up so that Maddie would be here to join in. She was pretty excited to be able to make one.
Our supplies: grass seed, potting soil, a pair of nylon socks, markers, glue, googly eyes, and flower pots
The girls wanted to coloured their pots. Sammie chose to colour hers all black, inside and out (I was really surprised that she didn't choose purple lol)
Maddie drew a design and wrote some words on hers
We put about a spoon or two of grass seed into the toe of the stocking.
Then started adding dirt, until it was about a baseball sized ball.
We tied the open end of the stocking closed, leaving some of the tail. We filled the cups with enough water to touch the bottom of the dirt ball.
Then they glued googly eyes on the stockings and drew their faces.
Sammie had to draw ears on hers. :)

They had so much fun making their first guys, and we had an extra pair of stockings, so they decided to make a second one each.
For this one, Maddie mixed the grass seed in with the soil to see what would happen. And she made it smaller than the other ones too. The face on her little guy was drawn on instead of gluing eyes on to it.
All happy and sitting on the window sill, ready to start growing :)
We had to check on them everyday. Sammie was always asking if they needed more to drink :)
At day 4, they started getting a little bit of growth, but not enough to get a good picture of yet. The next day, we got a good picture of the stubble
Maddie's little guy has grass coming out everywhere lol I think he's going to grow a beard. :)
After a week, they all had quite a bit of hair and Maddie's little one looked like he needed a shave lol
After two weeks, they are looking very good and maybe need a hair cut lol. The little one has turned into a grass ball :)
This was a great activity for Sammie to learn some patience and how to look after sometime growing.
We may have to try growing grass on other stuff, like sponges. Maybe an experiment about where grass will or won't grow.
Has anyone done any experiments with growing grass? I'd love to hear about them or if anyone has done the grass head guys activity :)
My 3 that are 5 will love to make these simple funny cute grass guys!Thanku :)
