Egg Carton Bugs

This was another craft that Sammie has made at daycare and wanted to make again at home.
So we got out an egg carton, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, paint and glue. I cut some of the pipe cleaners into quarters.

I cut the egg carton into individual cups and left 3 cups together for her to make a caterpillar

She painted the cups, deciding she needed her first bug to be purple.

We had trouble figuring out how to attach the legs to the cups. First she tried just gluing a pipe cleaner onto the side of the cup, but they wouldn't stay. Then she asked me to poke a hole in the side so she could stick it through and glue on the inside. This way worked, but not very well.

While she was busy with her bugs, I decided to experiment, trying to find a better way to attach the legs. I ended up poking two holes in the cup, across from each other. Then fed the pipe cleaner (a half size pipe cleaner) in one side and out the other side. It worked better, but Sammie was disappointed that the legs had to be the same colour. We decided to try twisting two colours together to make one colourful pipe cleaner. She was happier after we did that.

Sammie's finished bugs. :) She says some of them are wearing hats. She saw the bumps on the lid of the egg carton and decided that her bugs needed hats

Can anyone think of a better way to attach the legs, if we do this craft again?

  1. Hi, Maybe you could poke a hole and push the pipe cleaner through.. then tie a knot on the inside of the egg carton??
