We are co-hosting the Summer Virtual Book Club for Kids, along with the following blogs:

June's author is Mo Willems. :)

I had never heard of this author before signing up for the virtual book club. I was very excited to try out some new books with Sammie. We made a trip to the bookstore to see what we could find.

We ended up buying 3 of Mo Willems` books, as we had a hard time picking just one :)

Sammie loved all three and we had a hard picking out which book we wanted to use for our Summer Virtual Book Club post. They were all so good :)
We finally decided to do The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? :)

In this story, the duckling asks, politely, for and gets a cookie with nuts. The pigeon gets all upset that the duckling got a cookie with nuts and goes on about how the pigeon never gets what he wants. It turns out that the duckling gives the cookie to the pigeon :) The duckling then asks for another cookie, without nuts :)
Since the story was about cookies, we decided to bake some chocolate chip cookies and since the Pigeon loves nuts so much, we wanted to add nuts to some of the cookies

We used this recipe that I found in my recipe box
Ingredients
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup white sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts*
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
In medium bowl, cream together the butter, white sugar and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour and baking soda, stir into the creamed mixture. Fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts. Drop by rounded ice cream scoops onto a cookie sheet, and press down slightly to flatten. Cookies should be about 2 inches apart.

Bake for 11 to 14 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

*we only used 1/4 cup of nuts as we only wanted half of our dough to have nuts

We made up all the dough and scooped out one tray of plain dough. Then we mixed the nuts into the remaining dough and scooped out another tray of cookies with nuts :)

Sammie tried a plain cookie

I managed to convince Maddie to try one with nuts :)

Maddie has been quite interested in drawing lately, so she drew a picture of the duckling and the pigeon :)

We put the cookies onto two plates, one with nuts and one without nuts. The plates were set in front of the character that likes that type of cookie :) The duckling gets the cookies without nuts and the pigeon got the cookies with nuts :)

Since reading this book and doing this activity, we have gone back to the book store and bought a couple more of the Pigeon books :) Mo Willems has now become one of favourite authors here :)
