Purple Volcanoes

Last week, we shared the first experiment that we tried from this Primary Science Set that I had bought . Our first experiment was Dancing Raisins

This week, we will share our Purple Volcano experiment that also came with this set.
We gathered up some baking soda, vinegar, water and purple liquid water colour (Sammie requested that colour lol) And the pieces from the science set that we used were that dropper, mini test tube, beaker and flask (the card doesn't list the flask, but Maddie liked it better than the beaker).

Sammie decided to just watch as Maddie did the experiment. She told Maddie that she had to wear the goggles to be safe :)

The directions are to fill your beaker to the 1/2 line with water and add in 2 spoonfuls of baking soda (the kit doesn't come with a spoon, so Maddie used the lid from one of the test tubes) and mix well.

Pour some vinegar into a small test tube and add the colouring. Shake well.

Maddie decided to use the flask as her volcano instead of the beaker, as it looked more like the right shape :)

Then use the eye dropper to squirt the vinegar into the beaker (baking soda and water mixture) and watch it bubble up and over.

By using the dropper, Maddie only got little reactions and it didn't overflow the flask.

So she decided to pour all the coloured vinegar from the test tube into the flask

Then she got a huge reaction :) It really overflowed and bubbled :)

It was so funny to watch Sammie while Maddie was doing this experiment. :) She really had no interest in the mixing and setting it up part, so she would go and play with something else until it was ready to go. Then she would come over and look and when Maddie went to start adding the vinegar, she would run to the over side of the patio, saying "It's going to pop on me!" lol Once it was done fizzing and overflowing, she would come back to watch the last bit of reaction. I'm not sure if she thought it would explode and shoot everywhere or just what she thought was going to happen.

Maddie did this experiment at least 3 times. The first time, she followed the directions on the card from the kit, but didn't really get a lot of reaction. The next time, she doubled all the ingredients and got a bigger reaction, but still not a huge reaction. The third time, she doubled all the ingredients and poured all the vinegar into the flask, instead of using the dropper. This one got a huge reaction!

This was a great experiment :) So much fun! I think watching Sammie's reactions to the volcano was so funny. I'm sure we will be doing this again lots of times :)

We will continue to share our experiments that were including with the science kit and maybe more if we think of some :)
