Colourful rice part 1

One of the first actvities that I did with Sammie, was to make her some coloured rice. After seeing one of my friends on Facebook post some pictures of her children playing with some, I went searching on how to make it and that's how I found Pinterest lol

This is how I made my rice:
I didn't really measure any of this, just sort mixed until it looked the way I wanted it:)
Seperate the rice into small-medium freezer ziploc bags, one for each colour you want to make
Pour in about 1-2 capfuls of rubbing alcohol and a few drops of food colouring. Zip the bag closed and squish and mix around until the rice is evenly coloured. I then opened the bags and let them sit for a little bit. I then poured out the rice and spread evenly unto an old cookie sheet, lined with wax paper and set outside to dry.
For about a week or so, the rice did smell a bit like the rubbing alcohol, but the smell does go away.

At Mamasmiles, they made the coloured rice with hand sanitizer
If you are worried about your child playing with the rice made with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitzier , or if your child might try to eat it, here are a couple other ways to make it.
I found this other way to make the coloured rice from Kool-Aid, but haven't tried it yet.
6 cups white rice
1/2 cup hot tap water
2 pkg. koolaid
food coloring

Place rice in a gallon size ziplock bag. I a bowl combine hot water, kool aid, food coloring. Stir till dissolved pour over rice in bag. squish it around. pour onto a cookie sheet and allow to dry for a couple days.

At Inner Child Fun they made some rice using vinegar and food colouring. They used their coloured rice to make some "seek and find" bottles

Happy Hooligans made their rice with vinegar and gel food colouring in a margarine tub

Our favourite way to play with the coloured rice, is mostly as a sensory bin. I keep the rice in a medium sized tote. Sammie likes to scoop and pour and just play in it.
Both little ones like to stick their feet in it. Although Austin still isn't too sure about touching it and will only put his hands or feet in it for a few seconds at a time :)

Here are some more fun posts about using coloured rice in a sensory tub
At Home With Ali made a great Marine sensory tub with blue and green rice and a beautiful autumn themed bin as well

At Happy Hooligans they played with coloured rice outside

Taming the Goblin has a great post on how to keep from getting stressed out by sensory play

We love our colourful rice around here, so much fun to play with and so many ways to use it. :) I will soon be posting about some of the other ways to play with colourful rice.

Our rice was made over 9 months ago and it's still as fun now as it was when I made it

Do your kids like to play with colourful rice? What is their favourite way to play with it?

    1. Does the rice hold the food colouring ok? I thought it needed something to "lock" the colour to the rice. :)
