Coffee Filter Butterflies

Coffee Filter Butterflies

Sammie came home from daycare last week with a flower that she had made from coffee filters, coloured with markers and dipped in water.  I remembered seeing a similar activity on Pinterest, making butterflies, so I thought we would try making some.

Our supplies: markers, coffee filters, pipe cleaners and a spray bottle with water. We also decided to try using bingo daubers as well. You could probably use liquid water colours too.

Sammie started colouring away on her filters, using the markers and the bingo daubers.

She kept wanting to colour more and more filters. :)

I had thought to spray the filters with a spray bottle and she did a couple like that.

Then she started talking about how they did them at day care and how they folded them and dipped them in water and took them out quick lol So I got her a container of water and let her dip them. Dipping works better, it lets the colours run more :)

Then we hung them up to dry.

Once they were dry, we crumpled/folded them and pinched them in the center. Then wrapped a pipe cleaner around the middle and curled the ends for the anntena. She couldn't figure out how to crumple them or get the pipe cleaner tight enough, so I ended up doing that part. :)

Then we decided where to hang them and used sticky-tack to hang them on our patio door and the windows in our sunroom.

When Maddie got home from school and saw them, she had to make some too :)

It was a great craft, lots of fun, but I think Sammie had a lot more fun with the colouring and dipping than she did making them into butterflies.
She likes moving them around on the windows and making pictures with them :)
