July Summer VirtualBook Club

We are very excited to be co-hosting the Virtual Summer Book Club for Kids, along with the following blogs:

Toddler Approved

July's authors are Audrey and Don Wood.

These were more authors that we hadn't heard of before participating the Summer Book Club. We picked out some books, read them and then picked out which one that we wanted to do for this month.
We finally decided on "The Napping House" This is a great book :) Sammie loved it and can now recite most of it by herself.
It starts out with a napping granny, then a little boy joins her in her nap, then a dog, cat and a mouse join in as well. Along come a little flea who bites the mouse and chaos ensues lol The Napping House has a lot of repetition, with the same lines repeated on each page and new lines added.

I found this colour by number sheet on Making Learning Fun for the girls to colour. For Sammie's colouring sheet, I marked each number and colour number by colouring a line with the correct colour, as she couldn't read the colour names yet.
Sammie enjoyed this activity, but got bored with the colouring, very quickly. She did a great job at finding each number to match the correct colour, but I think it was just too much specific colouring for her. I think it would have been better for her if there was only one spot for each colour, rather than multiple spots for each colour. Of course, it also didn't help that she wasn't in the greatest of moods the day we did the colouring.
We also used these printables that I found on Kiz Club, with the idea of the velcro stick from Making Learning Fun.

I printed off the coloured version of the printable, cut out each figure and the bed and laminated them, to make them last longer. Then I put a piece of Velcro on the back of each character and along the stick. For the stick, I used two large Popsicle sticks and glued them together to make one long stick. I cut a small slit in the center of the bed for the stick to come through and glued it in place. Each of the printable sheets had a flea included, and I used both, but you really only need one flea. :)
As Maddie read the story to Sammie, she followed along and put the correct character onto the bed. First she put each of the napping characters on the stick and then took each one off and replaced it with the awake character :)
She really loved doing this. She continued playing with it long after Maddie had quit reading the book to her. Sammie would recite the story to herself as she put on and replaced the characters. She also started making up her own version of the story, doing it in different orders and leaving some characters out :)
We really enjoyed this month's authors, books and activities :) I'm definitely sure that we will be finding more of Audrey and Don Woods' books. :) Next month's author is Kevin Henkes. I'm really looking forward to finding a book and activity for him :) I think Maddie has some ideas in mind, as she has read some of his books already :) If you like this post, please join us at our Facebook page for more fun ideas. If you have completed one of our crafts or activities, we would love for you to share a photo on the Facebook page :) You can also follow us on Pinterest :)

  4. What cute printables that I'm sure they used again and again to retell the story. Off to go print some now and perhaps create our own The Napping House Story. Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to see your next Virtual Book Club Activity with Kevin Henkes!

  5. Your post inspired me to read The Napping House. I like your idea of laminating the printables and attaching them to sticks to help tell the story--very clever and creative. Please stop by and link this post to Artsy Play Wednesday on Capri + 3 today, a new linky for posts about arts, crafts and play activities. I hope to see you there.
